‘Somos Más Americanos’: The most important NPR Tiny Desk Concert of 2026
Within the first 15 seconds of NPR’s Los Tigres del Norte Tiny Desk Concert, I was in shambles. This video comes at a time, where now more than ever, immigrants are being targeted and torn apart from their families. Immigrants are being rounded up and caged like animals in horrendous conditions, forced to leave a country where they thought the American Dream could be a reality.
The video begins with an emotional production team, also in tears, thanking Los Tigres del Norte, the longtime norteño band that has been around since the late 1960s. The camera then pans out to the band, all smiles as they begin their set with “Somos Más Americanos,” which translates to “We are more American.”
Music has always served as a form of resistance and opening with this song felt intentional. It was a way of saying, “We hear you, we see you and we’re not going anywhere.” I’m sure it was an honor for the band to perform in a space like NPR, and it is a strong example of why representation matters.
I remember being a little girl and hearing their songs at family parties, not thinking much of it as my tios and tias danced around, beers in hand and singing aloud. Now, I am aware it was more than just music to be heard and danced to, it was a declaration of belonging.
The camera pans out to the audience from time to time, and you can see everyone dancing and singing along, feeling a sense of community and safety within those walls. And that love and pride transcend through the screen.
“Ya me gritaron mil veces / Que me regrese a mi tierra/ Porque aquí no quepo yo/” translates to “They’ve yelled at me a thousand times/ To go back to my land/Because I don’t belong here.”
If you haven’t already watched Los Tigres del Norte’s Tiny Desk Concert, I encourage you to do so. Listen to the lyrics, watch the audience and feel what it means to see a community represented in a space where its stories matter. Our cultures deserve to be celebrated and our presence cannot be erased. Because we have always been here and no border, no threat and no amount of hatred can erase the stories, culture or people. Porque somos más americanos.
