The 4th Annual Indigenous Foods Festival will be held on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wiyot Plaza, located between Cal Poly Humboldt’s Behavioral and Social Sciences building and the Native American Forum. The festival will feature outdoor tabling, discussion panels and hands-on workshops throughout the plaza.

Free and open to the public, this event serves as a celebration of Indigenous Food Sovereignty and is hosted by the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and Traditional Ecological Knowledges (TEK) Institute and the Native American Studies Department.

In a press release on the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and TEK Institute website, Professor Kaitlin Reed, co-director of the FSL lab, said that “The Indigenous Foods Festival is such an important way to recognize the deeply held knowledges and relationships to place that Indigenous communities maintain in our region. The continuation and celebration of traditional foods illustrates the survivance of California Indian peoples.”

By day, Agustin Valdez, works as a coordinator of the Diverse Male Scholars Center (DMSC) at Cal Poly Humboldt. On nights and weekends, he takes on a different role as the owner of two laundromats in Eureka.

Valdez grew up in Willow Creek before moving to the Bay Area for about 20 years. He returned to Humboldt County during the pandemic and has been working at Cal Poly Humboldt since 2022.

Valdez has focused on creating spaces that support the community both on and off campus. He owns Speedy Suds Laundry and Best Eureka Laundry, two businesses hoping to create a welcoming environment for people to do their laundry.

“We really want to be known as a pillar in our community,” Valdez said.

Speedy Suds, which opened in June, is named after Valdez’s father, whose nickname was “Speedy.” The laundromat is Valdez’s second business venture after opening Best Eureka Laundry in December 2025.

The ‘O Rew Redwoods Gateway opened to the public on Aug. 1 in Orick, Calif. The gateway is part of a large land restoration project and serves as a central place for multiple connecting trails. After 13 years of restoration, 125 acres of ancestral land were transferred back to the Yurok Tribe in June.

Tania Estrada Rodriguez, interpretation manager for the Yurok Tribe’s Cultural Resources Department, emphasized what this project means to the community.

“It’s an opportunity for the Yurok tribal membership to really see themselves reflected in a space,” Estrada Rodriguez said. “For the longest time frame, there have been state and national parks with a bunch of signage that has reflected somewhat, Yurok history, and other tribes within this region, but it never spoke about the history or the culture through the perspective of the tribal membership.”

El Centro Académico Cultural de Humboldt opened for the fall semester with a new student staff. Staff from spring 2026 were asked to reapply for their positions. According to our student sources, none were brought back, but El Leñador couldn’t verify this with El Centro’s coordinator, Brenda Perez.

El Leñador reached out to four former employees, and only two responded. El Leñador was able to confirm that one employee reapplied for their job and didn’t get rehired.

This fall semester, Cal Poly Humboldt announced that the Giant’s Cupboard will now accept SNAP/EBT. The Cupboard sells a variety of goods like fresh fruit, freezer meals, snacks and a large selection of beverages. Located on the first floor of Jolly Giants Commons, the convenience store is open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Todd Larsen, senior executive director for Enterprise Service Dining, Bookstores, Children’s Center, Student Activities & Events said, “Access to EBT on campus helps students who may be experiencing food insecurity purchase food where they live and study. We want to be able to provide EBT options on campus for our students who qualify for SNAP benefits.”

With later evening hours, the Cupboard aims to make food more accessible to students.

Royce Porter is a sophomore English major and employee at the Cupboard. Porter shared that this change will allow students to have more affordable food options on campus.

“You can purchase anything that is edible and food-related with your EBT card at the Cupboard,” Porter said, “so this is a great solution for students who need the help.” Myles Agathen, sophomore elementary education major, shared similar sentiments.

“It makes me happy for the people who use EBT because it makes it easier for them to get groceries.”

CPH is also working on expanding SNAP/EBT benefits to the College Creek Marketplace and the 101 Express Cafe/Market in the Hinarr Hu Moulik residence complex.
