Comradery on the court continues Women’s Basketball winning streak

Under the arena lights, the court gleamed as the Lumberjacks were determined to continue their winning streak.

Cal Poly Humboldt’s Women’s Basketball team secured their spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament after a winning season. They played their final two home games on Feb. 26 and Feb. 28 before heading to Pomona, going against Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Marcos Cougars.

Compared to last season, when the team struggled to consistently close out games and stack wins, the team kept improving with each game. One of the team’s guards, Sienna Cherwinski, who is new to the team and wears number five, shared her excitement before the match against Cal State Monterey Bay.

A crowd came out to witness the team’s win against Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 26, Lumberjacks scored 62-47. Winning again against the San Marcos Cougars on Feb. 28, the team scored 78-68.

“We’re really excited to rematch with them. I have a friend on there who actually played with me at Sonoma State. It’s always a competitive environment, but it’s really fun,” Cherwinski said.

Riley Sanz, number three on the team, who was on the team last year, reflected on the team’s growth.

“We’re a pretty new team, and for how we’re doing right now, it’s pretty impressive. I think it was kind of growing, each and every game, getting better,” Sanz said.

Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson shared her admiration for the team putting their hearts into the sport.

“Their energy and their intensity, which we talk about all the time and just their desire to win, their desire to get better, and their desire to win is really a joy to coach,” Bento-Jackson said.

Audience member, Matt Manago, returned to Humboldt to watch the Feb. 28 game, being a previous watcher in past seasons.

“Well, I think their style of playing is very controlled, methodical, and I like a lot of the passing and the teamwork,” said Manago.

When asked how their season was going, Cherwinski expressed the comradery of the team that propels them to give it their all on the court.

“We’ve really built a lot of good chemistry, and we’ve been able to pull through really tough wins,” Cherwinski said.
