In January, Eureka welcomed Kinfolk Beauty Supply store into the neighborhood, located at 318 W. Harris St. The store offers a wide variety of human and synthetic wigs, clip-ins, braiding hair, hair dyes, makeup, styling tools, everyday essentials and more. Kinfolk Beauty Supply is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“When customers enter, we want them to feel like they can breath, like shedding a layer
they only grow when they leave home,” owner Rochelle Burgess said. “When you walk through the doors, you’re getting an experience tailored to you.”

The event was hosted by the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to discuss supporting Palestine and the restrictions for gathering due to the Time, Place, and Manner (TPM) policy announced in August 2024.

About 40 participants peacefully read and distributed literature about the TPM policy and a zine titled “Anti-Palestinian Racism: Combating Discrimination & Building Equity.” They also chalked and made various posters and signs.

El martes 11 de marzo, agentes del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE), según se informa, visitaron dos negocios locales en Eureka. Brenda Pérez, directora ejecutiva de CdP, compartió los hechos ocurridos por ICE y cómo la Red de Respuesta Rápida los está gestionando.

Por el momento, CdP y El Leñador esperan los comentarios de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Eureka.

El 22 de marzo, de 2 p.m. a 5 p.m, se realizará una capacitación “Conoce tus Derechos” en el Centro Comunitario D. St. en Arcata. Estará organizada por CdP, la Ciudad de Arcata y Equity Arcata. También habrá un foro con administradores de agencias locales.

“Conoceremos la visión de los departamentos de policía para ver cómo se capacitan y cuál es su comprensión de la ley santuario”, dijo Pérez.

El martes 4 de marzo, una hora y media antes de medianoche, el consulado de la ciudad de Eureka declaró a Eureka como ciudad santuario por decisión unánime.

En su capacidad como ciudad santuario, Eureka se negara a cooperar con las autoridades federales de inmigracion. El departamento de policía de Eureka no aplicará las leyes federales de immigracion civil.

Residentes locales pidieron que Eureka se convirtiera en una ciudad santuario en respuesta a las deportaciones masivas que están ocurriendo en todo el país, que han dejado en vilo a muchos en el condado de Humboldt, especialmente a la comunidad inmigrante.

“Hay muchos seres humanos en el condado de Humboldt que se preocupan por la equidad, la justicia, la seguridad de todos nuestros vecinos”, dijo Gonzales después de la reunión. “Solo hay que estar presentes para los momentos en que podamos empujar hacia adelante”.

Rachel Montgomery, también miembro de SURJ, se mostró a favor del nuevo estatus de santuario.

“Tenemos muchos más intereses compartidos, yo como persona blanca, tengo muchos más intereses compartidos con mis vecinos inmigrantes que con un millonario”, dijo Montgomery. “Y así juntos podemos ser mucho más poderosos y protegernos mutuamente, apoyarnos de esa manera”.

On Tuesday, March 4, an hour and a half before midnight, the Eureka City Council declared Eureka a sanctuary city by unanimous decision.

In its capacity as a sanctuary city, Eureka will refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The Eureka Police Department will not enforce federal civil immigration laws.

Local residents called for Eureka to become a sanctuary city in response to the mass deportations occurring nation-wide, which have left many in Humboldt County, especially the immigrant community, on edge.

While Humboldt County has been a sanctuary county since Measure K was passed in 2018, Eureka’s new Resolution No. 2025 aligns the city with the sanctuary county status.

Along with numerous community members, members from different groups such as Centro del Pueblo, the Singing Grannies, the Sanctuary Arcata and Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) also attended the meeting.

“There’s a lot of humans in Humboldt County who care about equity, justice, safety for all of our neighbors,” Gonzalez said after the meeting. “Just be present for the moments when we can push that forward.”
