For years, the empty acreage inside the Airport Business Park on Boeing Avenue has sat untouched. According to recent county filings and public records, that’s about to change with the addition of an Amazon facility. Currently, no construction start date has been set.

As of April 25, “Project McKinley” remains in the permitting stage. Its final timeline depends on environmental study results and upcoming public hearings.

As a kid, Wahpepah stood at the feet of her elders pacing around the kitchen, mesmerized by every plate placed before her. Years later, she gets to serve that experience to every person that walks through her restaurant.

“I was taught at a very young age that’s where our ancestors really came through, really into the foods,” Wahpepah said.

Wahpepah published a cookbook in March called “A Feather and a Fork” which features 125 Indigenous recipes. She spent five years practicing, learning and documenting a variety of flavors inspired by her ancestors and childhood. A central theme in the book centers around reclaiming one’s taste buds and decolonizing our palettes through Indigenous foods.

“I talk a lot about that in the book and how we can really enjoy these flavors that are from the Earth and actually from Indigenous land and how we can really celebrate these dishes but really own our palate,” Wahpepah said.

In recent years, deferred action has undergone changes that have particularly affected immigration pathways, such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status. As of Jan. 17, 2025, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is not processing new DACA applications. However, this freeze on new applications does not affect DACA renewals, which are still being accepted and processed. The SIJ announced that starting May 10, 2026, all SIJs will be required to apply for deferred action separately from their green card application.

President Trump signed the executive order on Jan. 20, 2025 “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” aimed at stripping birthright citizenship from those who were born in the U.S. to undocumented parents. On April 1, the Supreme Court heard Trump’s arguments to end birthright citizenship, however they appeared skeptical.

The Supreme Court is expected to make a decision by late June or early July. Justices are likely to rule that the measure is unconstitutional and violates the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Rusty Hicks, chair of the California Democratic Party, explained that the U.S. has a system of checks and balances for instances exactly like this.

“In order to change the law, it would require the amending of the constitutional process by putting in place the 28th Amendment to the constitution, which would require two-thirds of the House and two-thirds of the Senate of the United States, and then require three-fourths support from the states. So three-fourths of the states would have to ratify what the House and Senate had put forward. I find it highly unlikely to near impossible for that to be established.”
