Proposition 41 will decide if a special tax, like the one-time billionaire tax, must be audited before appearing on ballots and would start counting toward the state spending limit.

Since the one-time billionaire tax was not written in compliance with the state’s spending limit, it would be a violation of Prop 41.

If Prop 41 receives a higher percentage of YES votes than Prop 40, the billionaire tax will be canceled and the billionaires will not pay the one time tax even if both pass.

An audit is an independent review of how a program spends money.

Before voters decide on a new special tax, the State Auditor must review the programs it would fund. The State Auditor would audit special taxes passed after January 1, 2026, every four years.

A YES vote means new special taxes would be audited before appearing on ballots and count toward the spending limit.

A NO vote means that current audit rules and spending limits would remain the same.

Roughly 50 protesters gathered in the Balabanis Art Quad on the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks to call for Cal Poly Humboldt to divest from investments that support war and to show support for Palestine.

The protesters marched from the university to the Arcata Plaza, chanting and playing a drum for the entire march. Once the group reached the Plaza, the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) organizers announced that they plan to start a committee to ensure that the university divests from stocks that support genocide and war profiteering. After several speeches, the protesters marched to the D Street Neighborhood Center, across from campus, where they disbanded.

“They’ve [Israel] been pulling massacres since before the Nakba and it’s been brutal. They’ve been bulldozing cities,” said Sally, YDSA Membership Development Committee chair. “Oct. 7 was really the last day Israel was able to quietly commit its genocide. Now the whole world knows.”

By day, Agustin Valdez, works as a coordinator of the Diverse Male Scholars Center (DMSC) at Cal Poly Humboldt. On nights and weekends, he takes on a different role as the owner of two laundromats in Eureka.

Valdez grew up in Willow Creek before moving to the Bay Area for about 20 years. He returned to Humboldt County during the pandemic and has been working at Cal Poly Humboldt since 2022.

Valdez has focused on creating spaces that support the community both on and off campus. He owns Speedy Suds Laundry and Best Eureka Laundry, two businesses hoping to create a welcoming environment for people to do their laundry.

“We really want to be known as a pillar in our community,” Valdez said.

Speedy Suds, which opened in June, is named after Valdez’s father, whose nickname was “Speedy.” The laundromat is Valdez’s second business venture after opening Best Eureka Laundry in December 2025.

The ‘O Rew Redwoods Gateway opened to the public on Aug. 1 in Orick, Calif. The gateway is part of a large land restoration project and serves as a central place for multiple connecting trails. After 13 years of restoration, 125 acres of ancestral land were transferred back to the Yurok Tribe in June.

Tania Estrada Rodriguez, interpretation manager for the Yurok Tribe’s Cultural Resources Department, emphasized what this project means to the community.

“It’s an opportunity for the Yurok tribal membership to really see themselves reflected in a space,” Estrada Rodriguez said. “For the longest time frame, there have been state and national parks with a bunch of signage that has reflected somewhat, Yurok history, and other tribes within this region, but it never spoke about the history or the culture through the perspective of the tribal membership.”
