With ICE conducting arrests of student activists from universities across the country, I have been reflecting on the encampments for Palestine that occurred on our very own campus just one year ago and asking myself have people just moved on?

It feels unreal to me, waking up every morning to a new headline, reading about how marginalized communities around the world are continually being targeted by racist heteropatriarchal systems of power, yet having to go on about my day to day life as a student.

How can we be expected to keep it pushing when our world is seemingly falling apart in front of us? It has now been 560 days of an ongoing genocide in Palestine, yet with time passing by, I have seen less and less people speaking out.

There will be a week-long series of events on campus focusing on the past and current importance of student activism and global awareness, starting on April 22. It will include teach-ins, an expression gallery, a community potluck and more. The facilitator of the event is Professor Rouhollah Aghasaleh. They emphasized the importance of student activism for social justice advancements within academia.

April 22: Opening Rally & Keynote– Featuring voices of student leaders, faculty and community allies in the Art Quad. Keynote Speakers: Rami Younis and Chrisley Carpio.
April 22-30: Art Expression Gallery – A powerful multimedia showcase of protest imagery, student narratives and creative resistance in the Lumberjack Lounge.
Teach-ins, Film Screenings and Workshops – Including documentaries such as The Wanted 18, Who Bombed Judi Bari and Lyd, as well as virtual exhibits like The Phoenix of Gaza XR.

El 14 de marzo, el Departamento de Educación de los Estados Unidos (ED) lanzó investigaciones por presunta discriminacion basadas en raza contra tres universidades de California y 49 universidades a nivel nacional, incluyendo a Cal Poly Humboldt (CPH). La Oficina de Derechos Civiles (OCR) del Departamento de Educación emitió una carta el 14 de febrero amenazando con cortar la financiación federal a las escuelas que apoyan los programas de DEI. El 25 de marzo, el presidente interino de CPH, Michael Spagna, envió un correo electrónico en respuesta a la investigación iniciada, indicando que la universidad está trabajando estrechamente con el sistema de la CSU para abordar las acusaciones y que cooperarán plenamente con la Oficina de Derechos Civiles del Departamento de Educación durante su investigación.

El 9 de abril a las 5:35 p.m., Cal Poly Humboldt envió un correo electrónico informando a los estudiantes y profesores que un empleado fue arrestado en el campus ayer.

El correo electrónico dice lo siguiente:

“El martes 8 de abril, el Departamento de Policía Universitaria (UPD) colaboró con la Fiscalía del Condado de Humboldt en el arresto de un empleado en el campus en relación con los cargos presentados por la Fiscalía (Códigos Penales 288.2 y 288.3), entidad que lidera la investigación. Estos cargos no están relacionados con el trabajo del empleado en Cal Poly Humboldt, su estatus migratorio, las protestas ni ninguna otra actividad relacionada con el campus. No podemos hacer más comentarios sobre asuntos de personal ni sobre la investigación criminal en curso.

Entendemos que noticias como esta pueden ser preocupantes para nuestra comunidad universitaria. Les informamos que hay apoyo disponible. Los estudiantes pueden comunicarse con los Servicios de Consejería y Psicología (CAPS) al (707) 826-3236 o acceder a apoyo las 24 horas, los 7 días de la semana a través de la función “TalkNow” de TimelyCare. El profesorado y el personal pueden recibir apoyo confidencial a través del Programa de Asistencia al Empleado, disponible las 24 horas, los 7 días de la semana a través de Empathia.
