On Friday, Jan. 30, from noon to 1 p.m., the Eureka Chinatown Project (ECP) will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the Eureka Chinatown Monument. The public ceremony will take place on the corner of 1st and E street in Eureka and mark the beginning of the monument’s actualization. The groundbreaking for the monument will be a symbolic moment in the project’s timeline.

“[The groundbreaking] let[s] the community know that all of our donors, all the people that supported us, that this project is still moving forward,” ECP’s Program Coordinator Chris Chu said.

On Jan. 23, at noon, around 150 peaceful protesters gathered around the David Josiah Lawson mural holding Palestinian flags, signs and yelling chants. The group marched down to the Arcata Plaza where people had the chance to speak. Protest marshals from different organizations such as Students for Democratic Society, Centro del Pueblo, 50-51, Young Democratic Socialist of America and Humboldt Anti-War Committee were present. The group demanded the abolition of I.C.E., the impeachment of Trump and urged Cal Poly Humboldt to divest from investments they felt were unethical and further contributed to the direct harm of Palestinians and immigrant communities.

Stella Joy, a protestor and community member shared why showing up as a community is especially important.

“It’s integral to keeping the community alive, to keeping humanity alive,” Joy said. “We’re witnessing the death of so many people around the world, and we’re losing touch with humanity, and together, the best way to heal that, I think, is by being part of your community, being part of organizations that want to bring about change.”

El 2 de enero, un incendio estructural se estalló alrededor de las 2:30 p.m. en la calle 10 y H en Arcata. El fuego comenzó cerca en Hensel’s Hardware y se propagó a Global Village Gallery, Northtown Books y Dandar’s Boardgames and Books. Bomberos locales respondieron al incendio y departamentos vecinos como Eureka, Fortuna y Humboldt Bay Fire fueron enviados para asistir al Distrito de Bomberos de Arcata.

A structure fire erupted today at 10th and H St. in Arcata around 2:30 p.m. The fire started around Hensel’s Hardware and spread to Global Village Gallery, Northtown Books and Dandar’s Boardgames and Books. Local firefighters have responded to the fire and neighboring departments such as Eureka, Fortuna and Humboldt Bay Fire were dispatched to assist Arcata Fire District. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined.

According to Arcata City Manager Merritt Perry, approximately seven businesses and eight apartments were damaged in the fire.

“There’s pretty much a total loss from what I can tell,” Perry said.

At around 5:45 p.m., the fire was mostly contained and firefighters worked with excavators to knock down parts of the buildings to reach all parts of the fire from within the buildings. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) turned off the gas in the area as a precautionary measure.

“This whole block is inoculated and the adjacent buildings, so I think they have it contained right now and there’s not additional risk of it spreading,” Perry said.

“They definitely sprayed down my building but it is still a little concerning, I have a lot of stuff in there,” said Cameron Clarke on the scene, a cosmetologist at One Stop Salon, located close to the fire.

A mandatory evacuation has been issued for surrounding businesses and residences by Arcata Police and Fire personnel. According to Arcata City Council member and former Arcata Mayor Alex Stillman, the City of Arcata is working with the Red Cross to pay for rooms at Hotel Arcata for people who have been displaced from the fire. If you have been displaced due to the fire contact Red Cross at (707) 496-8278.

Club Anti in collaboration with instructor Kambri Briggs (name of Club Anti organizer, and location, is disclosed for safety concerns), offered a free self defense class, promoting that people who are BIPOC, queer, sex workers, non-binary, gender non-conforming and trans, are first priority for the class. These free self defense classes are held on the first Monday of the month.

Marginalized groups need spaces like these not only for the education and tips they provide, but to recognize that we live in a very unsettling world, where harm can be brought to us in any situation, whether we expect it or not, and whether we'll be prepared for it or not.

“Attendees are able to attend as many classes as they would like and the goal is for students to join us multiple times so they can enhance their skills. Folks can sign up by emailing: mailto:lemonsquatter@proton.me.” said Club Anti Organizer.

El club Anti en colaboración con la instructora Kambri Briggs (el nombre de la persona organizadora del Club Anti y la localización se mantienen reservados por razones de seguridad), ofreció una clase gratuita de defensa personal, priorizando a personas afroamericanos, indígenas y de color, queer, trabajadoras sexuales, no binarias, de género no conforme y trans. Estas clases de defensa personal gratuitas se llevan a cabo el primer lunes del mes.

Los grupos marginalizados necesitan espacios como estos no solo por la educación y los consejos que ofrecen, sino también para reconocer que vivimos en un mundo muy inquietante donde, el daño puede alcanzarnos en cualquier situación, lo esperemos o no y estemos preparadas o no.

“Las personas participantes pueden asistir a todas las clases que deseen, y el propósito es que el estudiantado se una varias veces para seguir mejorando sus habilidades.
