Centro del Pueblo verified reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence in Willits, Mendocino County on Friday, May 1.
Centro del Pueblo, a local organization dedicated to serving Indigenous migrant communities, created the hotline (707) 200-8091 to verify ICE sightings in the greater Northern Coastal area. On May 1, they posted to their Instagram @centrodelpueblo, confirming the ICE presence in Willits, about 3 hours from Humboldt County.
“We encourage everyone to stay calm, informed and connected,” the post said. “Share only verified information and continue looking out for one another. Together, we keep our community safe.”
Following the report, Cal Poly Humboldt sent out a campus wide email informing the community of the news and providing instructions on what to do if ICE is seen on campus.
“The University’s Community Resilience Steering Group is actively monitoring the situation, and we want to reiterate that in the event of ICE activity on our campus or in our community, the University will share verified, timely information through official University communication channels, including direct text messages,” the email said.
If someone sees ICE on campus they should immediately notify Interim Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Michelle Caisse at (707) 826-4501 or michelle.caisse@humboldt.edu, or Title IX Coordinator & DHR Prevention Administrator David Hickcox at (707) 826-5177 or david.hickcox@humboldt.edu. If neither administrator is available, contact the University Police Department at (707) 826-555.
