The ‘O Rew Redwoods Gateway opened to the public on Aug. 1 in Orick, Calif. The gateway is part of a large land restoration project and serves as a central place for multiple connecting trails. After 13 years of restoration, 125 acres of ancestral land were transferred back to the Yurok Tribe in June.

Tania Estrada Rodriguez, interpretation manager for the Yurok Tribe’s Cultural Resources Department, emphasized what this project means to the community.

“It’s an opportunity for the Yurok tribal membership to really see themselves reflected in a space,” Estrada Rodriguez said. “For the longest time frame, there have been state and national parks with a bunch of signage that has reflected somewhat, Yurok history, and other tribes within this region, but it never spoke about the history or the culture through the perspective of the tribal membership.”

El Centro Académico Cultural de Humboldt opened for the fall semester with a new student staff. Staff from spring 2026 were asked to reapply for their positions. According to our student sources, none were brought back, but El Leñador couldn’t verify this with El Centro’s coordinator, Brenda Perez.

El Leñador reached out to four former employees, and only two responded. El Leñador was able to confirm that one employee reapplied for their job and didn’t get rehired.

This fall semester, Cal Poly Humboldt announced that the Giant’s Cupboard will now accept SNAP/EBT. The Cupboard sells a variety of goods like fresh fruit, freezer meals, snacks and a large selection of beverages. Located on the first floor of Jolly Giants Commons, the convenience store is open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Todd Larsen, senior executive director for Enterprise Service Dining, Bookstores, Children’s Center, Student Activities & Events said, “Access to EBT on campus helps students who may be experiencing food insecurity purchase food where they live and study. We want to be able to provide EBT options on campus for our students who qualify for SNAP benefits.”

With later evening hours, the Cupboard aims to make food more accessible to students.

Royce Porter is a sophomore English major and employee at the Cupboard. Porter shared that this change will allow students to have more affordable food options on campus.

“You can purchase anything that is edible and food-related with your EBT card at the Cupboard,” Porter said, “so this is a great solution for students who need the help.” Myles Agathen, sophomore elementary education major, shared similar sentiments.

“It makes me happy for the people who use EBT because it makes it easier for them to get groceries.”

CPH is also working on expanding SNAP/EBT benefits to the College Creek Marketplace and the 101 Express Cafe/Market in the Hinarr Hu Moulik residence complex.

The loss of their school bus route has left Bridgeville-area high school students facing hardship accessing their education. At a board meeting on Sept. 8, three potential options were considered: reinstating the bus route, reimbursing parents or making no changes to the cancellation. The board will vote this month as to whether they will reimburse parents for their commutes.

Since December of 2024, those living along state Route 36 in southern Humboldt have faced difficulties accessing necessary resources due to an unstable highway. The local high schoolers are among those most affected by this issue, as their bus route to Fortuna High, located 28 miles west of their town, was canceled after a slide occurred nearly two years ago.

During the recent board meeting, many families in the area said they were forced to relocate on account of the transportation issue, but other families are without this option. With rising gas prices and limited economic opportunity in the area, families said they are at an incredible loss following the route cancellation.

David Bacon, a California-based photographer, writer, social activist and union organizer has dedicated most of his career to documenting labor history. Bacon traveled to Eureka to showcase his latest exhibit.

Bacon’s recent traveling exhibit, “In Camps, Under Trees and Evicted, Farm Workers and People Living Close to the Line in Northern California”, documents 35 years of experiences, struggles, strengths and the resilience of farmworkers in Northern California.
The exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the 1965 farmworker strike, demonstrating the lived laborworker experience, as well as diving into agriculture, California history and social political movements of the 20th century through black and white images.

Bacon’s photography is currently being held at Centro del Pueblo, located at 3008 Broadway in Eureka. Through collaboration, the exhibit was able to travel from the previous UC Davis Labor and Community Center location to Centro del Pueblo. The exhibit’s initial opening reception was held on Sept. 26 from 5-7 p.m., but will continue to stay up until Nov. 3, and is free and open to the public. The exhibit is open during Centro del Pueblo’s normal weekly hours, which can be found on their webpage.
