Named after the region of Humboldt County, Del Norte and neighboring tribal lands — True North started as a community driven social justice organization aimed at bettering education, environment and relationships with local Indigenous tribes. In 2009, the California Endowment identified Del Norte County as a Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiatives site, prompting community organizing.

“There was a desire to start something different, start an organizing movement more responsive to what community members were really experiencing on the ground,” True North leader Carmen Elena L’Annunziata Monge said.

This year’s theme, “Desde Este Lado Del Sueño” will focus on examining borders, dreams and the realities in between. More than 30 events, including a film screening, a community meal, and a dance performance, are scheduled to take place between February 9-12 during International Education Week. This is the 27th year the event has been hosted on campus.

The participants of IEW believe that maintaining an international scope, especially now, is more important than ever. Holmes hopes this opportunity continues to ignite a spark for the next generations.

“Why we did it before was to try and reinforce our global connections,” Holmes said. “Why I do it now is because somebody needs to keep the light burning for global engagement.”

Since its release in November, “Heated Rivalry” has rocked the romance scene. In just one month, “Heated Rivalry” reached the number one show on HBO Max within its first two episodes. The show has been praised, not only for its steamy romance but for how it avoids focusing on queer tragedy stereotypes. It also opens a larger conversation about who gets represented in mainstream queer shows and movies.

Representation is not just about presence,but about centrality. Characters of color, if
present at all, often lack complexity or agency.

The industry tends to treat gay people and people of color as separate diversity boxes. There is a larger cultural pattern in which queer sports narratives center white protagonists.
Media frames progress as “enough” once one marginalized group is visible, while people of color are expected to wait their turn.
