Nelson Hall East is home to various cultural centers on campus including the Umoja Center for Pan African Student Excellence, ADPIC-MENA and El Centro Académico Cultural de Humboldt.

On the first floor, resources are provided such as ELITE Scholars, the Career Center, Project Rebound and independent 24 hour study spaces. On Feb. 27, at 11 a.m., protesters occupied Nelson Hall East resulting in the administration closing the building and restricting access.

Cal Poly Humboldt graduate student Richard “Rick” Toledo, a student activist, was arrested for alleged charges that occurred during the Feb. 27 sit-in of the Goodwin Forum in Nelson Hall East. The charges included suspicion of felony assault, battery, false imprisonment and conspiracy. He was held in Humboldt County Jail from March 6-8 under a Ramey Warrant before being released on bail.

In addition to his criminal case, Toledo is also facing suspension by Cal Poly Humboldt and a separate restraining order was filed by Cal Poly Humboldt, which is being represented by Samuel Kim, the Deputy Attorney General. The restraining order case has been dismissed and El Leñador confirmed the dismissal after Toledo provided the request for dismissal signed by both parties.

On March 26, Toledo attended an interim suspension appeal hearing. He is scheduled to have another university disciplinary hearing on April 8.

“I decided to build out the thing that I wish that I had,” Love said.

Student election results were announced on March 16 with a new Associated Students Board of Directors that will lead the student government at Cal Poly Humboldt for the 2026–2027 academic year.

The elected board includes Ayan Cabot as president, Roselyn Montanez as executive vice president, Nate Heron as administration and finance vice president, Gabriel Elbert-Rasmussen as officer of academic affairs, Paola Ferreyra as officer of environmental sustainability, Riley Hemenover as officer of student affairs and Ruth Worthington as officer of social justice, equity and inclusion.

The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is hosting their annual Take Back the Night series of events from April 6-17. The event is part of a global movement to end sexualized and gender-based violence. The events will be hosted for two weeks and are open to the public.

The main event will be hosted on April 17, starting with a survivor speakout, a rally then ending with a silent vigil.

“After the rally, we’ll march down to the Arcata square and we’ll have our banner, we’ll have some chants going, and then hold a silent vigil,” Shearer said.

El Women’s Resource Center (WRC) está organizando su serie de eventos anuales Take Back the Night en Abril 6-17. El evento es parte de un movimiento global con el objetivo de terminar la violencia sexualizada y basada en el género. On March 22, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained a woman in front of her daughter at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), amid deployment of ICE agents to 14 international airports across the U.S. as a result of the partial government shutdown. While SFO is not currently one of the airports the Trump administration has sent agents to, this incident has caused anxiety in many throughout the greater Bay Area and Northern California.

On March 27, House Republicans rejected a bipartisan Senate deal to end the government shutdown which is affecting the Department of Homeland Security and in turn, leaving the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) without pay. President Trump signed an order the same day to tap into a source of funds to pay TSA. White House Border Czar Tom Homan told CNN that ICE will remain at US airports until TSA operations are back to normal and “feel like they’re 100 percent.”
