They are currently working on constructing a monument on the corner of 1st and E streets that will honor the journey of Chinese community members throughout their time here in Humboldt.

Fiesta Folklórica took place at the Van Duzer Theatre for the first time from Feb. 28 to March 2. The event featured performances from Ballet Folklórico de Humboldt, Yolteolt Danza Azteca, Eureka High School LatinX Club and Ballet Folklórico Infantil de Arcata. The program featured a variety of dances from all over Mexico. Starting with Indigenous dances and then moving to the dances that have Indigenous, European and Afro-caribbean influences, representing cultural heritage and history from the states of Oaxaca, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Vera Cruz and Jalisco.

In January, Eureka welcomed Kinfolk Beauty Supply store into the neighborhood, located at 318 W. Harris St. The store offers a wide variety of human and synthetic wigs, clip-ins, braiding hair, hair dyes, makeup, styling tools, everyday essentials and more. Kinfolk Beauty Supply is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“When customers enter, we want them to feel like they can breath, like shedding a layer
they only grow when they leave home,” owner Rochelle Burgess said. “When you walk through the doors, you’re getting an experience tailored to you.”

Harris St. La tienda ofrece una amplia variedad de pelucas humanas y sintéticas, clips, trenzas para el cabello, tintes para el cabello, maquillaje, herramientas de peinado, artículos esenciales para el día a día y más. Kinfolk Beauty Supply está abierto de martes a domingo de 11 a.m. a 6 p.m.

Students and community members sat side by side on the steps of the Cal Poly Humboldt Library at noon on March 13. The event was hosted by the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to discuss supporting Palestine and the restrictions for gathering due to the Time, Place, and Manner (TPM) policy announced in August 2024.

About 40 participants peacefully read and distributed literature about the TPM policy and a zine titled “Anti-Palestinian Racism: Combating Discrimination & Building Equity.” They also chalked and made various posters and signs.

El martes 11 de marzo, agentes del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE), según se informa, visitaron dos negocios locales en Eureka. Brenda Pérez, directora ejecutiva de CdP, compartió los hechos ocurridos por ICE y cómo la Red de Respuesta Rápida los está gestionando.

Por el momento, CdP y El Leñador esperan los comentarios de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Eureka.

El 22 de marzo, de 2 p.m. a 5 p.m, se realizará una capacitación “Conoce tus Derechos” en el Centro Comunitario D. St. en Arcata. Estará organizada por CdP, la Ciudad de Arcata y Equity Arcata. También habrá un foro con administradores de agencias locales.

“Conoceremos la visión de los departamentos de policía para ver cómo se capacitan y cuál es su comprensión de la ley santuario”, dijo Pérez.
