Rick Toledo, a Cal Poly Humboldt student, was arrested Friday, March 6 at 1 a.m. by the University Police Department. He is currently being held under a Ramey warrant at the Humboldt County Correctional facility, according to the Humboldt County booking sheet.

As per the California Legislative Information, Ramey warrants allow officers to arrest individuals with probable cause without charging them with an official crime.

The booking sheet listed that Toledo was arrested for felony assault and battery, conspiracy and false imprisonment. El Leñador has not been able to verify if other students have been arrested.

This morning, on March 6 at 11 a.m. protestors began meeting at the courthouse to show their support for Toledo and demand his release.

El Leñador requested confirmation from the university for the number of students arrested due to involvement in the Nelson Hall sit-in. They said they could not provide that information due to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). El Leñador was unable to verify what led to Toledo’s arrest and if it was in connection with the sit-in.

Following the Nelson Hall East occupation on Feb. 27, some students have received notice of disciplinary actions from the university, including campus suspension.

When asked, the university did not disclose the exact number of students facing suspension, disciplinary actions or specific disciplinary actions, stating that due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), they cannot comment on student conduct cases.

About 20 protestors held a sit-in in the Goodwin Forum in Nelson Hall East from 11 a.m. Feb. 27, to 2 a.m. on Feb. 28, following a public forum in the SAC quad with Interim Vice President for Administration and Finance Mike Fisher.

Protestors committed to three demands: divestment from all ties to Israel, implementation of a sanctuary campus policy and solidarity with the Teamsters union strike. No arrests were made, the university told El Leñador that several individuals who occupied the building have been identified and the university will follow up with campus and legal processes. Some students have been notified of their suspensions and charges as of March 3.

On Jan. 26, the new Dreamer Center was added to the Balabanis House. Up the staircase to the left, you’ll find the office of Georgina Celda Salvarrey, who stepped into her new role as the Dreamer Center coordinator that same day.

The Dreamer Center will be a hub for students for financial aid, health, food and legal resources.

The Dreamer Center will act as an extension of other cultural resources on campus and provide additional aid for undocumented and mixed-status students.

“I’ve always leaned toward causes where people are needed to fight, so it was logical for me to apply to this job,” Salvarrey said.

The Social Justice, Equity and Inclusion Center at Cal Poly Humboldt is hosting their 32nd annual Social Justice Summit (SJS) on campus from March 4-6. The theme for this year’s SJS is Moving Together: Expression in Action. All events are free and open to the public.

A variety of workshops and presentations surrounding the theme are going to be given by a diverse panel of presenters. The event will also feature a celebration of Holi, a Hindu holiday celebrating colors, love and spring, hosted by ADPI+MENA.

“There’s a lot of social movement right now, you know, physical movement builds people and brings communities together,” said Victoria Carrillo, student and organizer for the SJS.
