- ES 280: Hip Hop Conference Attendance
ES 280: Hip Hop Conference Attendance is taught by Ramona Bell, professor and chair of the Department of Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
The two day conference, hosted at Cal Poly Humboldt, brings together students, faculty, artists and community members to explore hip hop culture through academic presentations, performances and community building events.
The conference welcomes a range of creative and academic contributions, including spoken word, rapping, DJing, MCing and presentations. The event is free and open to the public.
“It’s a good way in which students collaborate with faculty and it’s wonderful,” Bell said. “It’s one of the few conferences or places or spaces on campus where students and faculty really work closely on a topic that they’re both concerned about.”
The conference takes place on Thursday, April 30, with a keynote speaker or panel focused on hip hop culture. On Friday, May 1, student presentations take place in Siemens Hall, followed by a performance and community gathering at the D Street Community Center, including food and entertainment.
For students enrolled in ES 280, the main requirement is attending the two day conference and writing a reflection paper. The course does not require regular class meetings, making it a flexible option for students seeking a meaningful learning experience while earning credits.
“It’s a place where we can come together and lean on each other, for encouragement, for uplift, for that light at the end of the tunnel,” Bell said.
2. ES 396: International Latino Film Seminar
The 27th Annual International Latino Film Festival is a three day event hosted March 2-4, from 6 p.m.-10:20 p.m. at The Minor Theatre, presented by the World Languages and Cultures department. This year’s theme, “Desde Este Lado Del Sueno” will focus on examining borders, dreams and the realities in between.
ES 396 is a one unit course any student can enroll in and receive credit for attending the film festival. Students can also enroll for credit in the following courses: ES 396, HIST 396, SPAN 396 and earn one unit for attending the festival.
Students get the chance to view films and learn about Latin America and the Latin American presence in the U.S. Outside of the festival, the class will meet twice in person Feb. 26 and March 12 from 6 p.m.-6:50 p.m.
“I think the people who are making policy, there’s a real gap in knowledge there and a real sort of unwillingness, I think to engage with the humanity of immigration,” Suzanne Pasztor, director of the International Latino Film Festival, said.
Pasztor said this year’s theme is an “opportunity for engaging a little more with the actual human experiences behind immigration and some of the history behind that.”
The event is free and open to the public. Each evening begins with an introduction from this year’s keynote speaker Maria Luisa Ruiz, professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at St.Mary’s College. After each screening, panelists share their perspectives on the film and engage in an interactive discussion with the audience.
The festival is still seeking panelists and moderators. If interested you can find out more by contacting sp49@humboldt.edu.
