A structure fire erupted today at 10th and H St. in Arcata around 2:30 p.m. The fire started around Hensel’s Hardware and spread to Global Village Gallery, Northtown Books and Dandar’s Boardgames and Books. Local firefighters have responded to the fire and neighboring departments such as Eureka, Fortuna and Humboldt Bay Fire were dispatched to assist Arcata Fire District. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined.

According to Arcata City Manager Merritt Perry, approximately seven businesses and eight apartments were damaged in the fire.

“There’s pretty much a total loss from what I can tell,” Perry said.

At around 5:45 p.m., the fire was mostly contained and firefighters worked with excavators to knock down parts of the buildings to reach all parts of the fire from within the buildings. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) turned off the gas in the area as a precautionary measure.

“This whole block is inoculated and the adjacent buildings, so I think they have it contained right now and there’s not additional risk of it spreading,” Perry said.

“They definitely sprayed down my building but it is still a little concerning, I have a lot of stuff in there,” said Cameron Clarke on the scene, a cosmetologist at One Stop Salon, located close to the fire.

A mandatory evacuation has been issued for surrounding businesses and residences by Arcata Police and Fire personnel. According to Arcata City Council member and former Arcata Mayor Alex Stillman, the City of Arcata is working with the Red Cross to pay for rooms at Hotel Arcata for people who have been displaced from the fire. If you have been displaced due to the fire contact Red Cross at (707) 496-8278.

Club Anti in collaboration with instructor Kambri Briggs (name of Club Anti organizer, and location, is disclosed for safety concerns), offered a free self defense class, promoting that people who are BIPOC, queer, sex workers, non-binary, gender non-conforming and trans, are first priority for the class. These free self defense classes are held on the first Monday of the month.

Marginalized groups need spaces like these not only for the education and tips they provide, but to recognize that we live in a very unsettling world, where harm can be brought to us in any situation, whether we expect it or not, and whether we'll be prepared for it or not.

“Attendees are able to attend as many classes as they would like and the goal is for students to join us multiple times so they can enhance their skills. Folks can sign up by emailing: mailto:lemonsquatter@proton.me.” said Club Anti Organizer.

Tea is an app that advertises itself as a platform "to give women the tools they need to date safely in a world that often overlooks their protection.” The app is mainly geared toward women dating men, to provide a space where anonymous users can post photos, names and descriptions about specific men in the area. The app has surfaced in the campus community and students are using it to share their experiences with specific people in the local dating scene.

Dating in a small town like Arcata can be difficult. Reed described dating in Humboldt County in one word, “funky.”

“In a big city, you could be a really messed up person. You could be a demon and just get lost in anonymity, but up here you see your exes, you see people you’ve hooked up with and you have to sort of confront that,” said Reed.

Finals week has a way of turning students into sleep-deprived, caffeine-fueled machines. Late nights, skipped meals and cutting back on water so you don’t lose study time may feel normal, but this survival mode quietly sabotages your memory, focus and exam performance.

By the time exams arrive, our brains are low on fuel, our bodies are dehydrated and our muscles are stiff from sitting too long. We drag ourselves to class wondering why hours of studying didn’t translate into better scores.

If this sounds familiar, here are five simple study tips you can start this finals season to set yourself up for success.

For the following tips, read the full story on our website.

The J has been Cal Poly Humboldt’s go-to spot for quick, reliable meals, but earlier this semester, many students walked in and noticed something missing, the vegan bar.

Dining Services later explained that the vegan options had been moved into the main food line to “improve quality and service,” the change left many students confused and frustrated.

Junior transfer student Guillermo Garcia Zacarias, who eats at The J regularly as a vegan, said the change made it difficult to maintain proper nutrition.

“It’s like what am I going to do with just tofu and oranges and rice every single day,” Zacarias said. “I talked to my doctor about it, I also talked to the health provider here at the Health Center and she wrote me a letter of support… she was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t want you to eat this’ so she wrote a letter for me to withdraw from the mandatory meal plan for next semester.”

Dining Services has now confirmed the vegan bar is officially back. Although views differ with the variety provided.

“I would eat a lot healthier if their vegetables tasted better,” student Andrew Reynolds said.
